Project “Organic Waste Management in the Coco Island National Park” (PNIC).

Location:

Isla del CocoPacific Ocean, 533 kilometers southwest of Cabo Blanco.

Territory Extension:

24.000 square kilometers

General comments:

One of the most recognized places in the world is Coco Island Park for the following reasons:

  • Named World Heritage Site (UNESCO)
  • Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar site)
  • National Cultural and Historical Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Costa Rica.

In this context the Project arose as a response to one of the problems of the island: the management of organic waste.

In spite of implementing the eradication of invasive species of flora and fauna, a method had to be applied that would ensure elimination of seed germination, a product of the entry of vegetable type foods.

One way to achieve this was to build a compost pile, capable of neutralizing any possibility of germination of new plants and with its use, organic fertilizer could be obtained for the nurseries of endemic species of the island.

Project goal:

Efficiently and effectively manage organic waste in the Coco Island National Park, with no environmental impact.

Actions Completed:

  • Training personnel in the culture of recycling or waste classification and implementation of new practices, to produce the least impact on ecosystems.
  • Training Talks on the use and handling of new substances.
  • Construction of the compost pile.
  • Consulting and logistics.
