A Park For All

An existing trail inside the Carara National Park is scheduled to be retrofitted to become universally accessible, so that visitors with disabilities may fully enjoy it. A total of 900 meters will be improved to provide an adequate surface that can be securely and autonomously used by people with wheel chairs, walking sticks or walkers. Pervious concrete will be used for this purpose.

ProParques identified this as a vital need and has the ability to gather stakeholders that can make this project successful, in order to improve the visitor experience. This will provide access to a specific group of people able to enjoy a track in a national park. The national parks are opening to an audience that had been, until now, left out.
The project is one of kind in the region and will benefit more than 400,000 Costa Ricans with disabilities, elderly people and those who have trouble getting around (pregnant women or people with obesity among others).
The trail will include haptic maps among other technical aids that will ensure folks with disabilities can truly experience Carara.
We expect to open this trail this coming December. The estimate for the first stage of the project exceeds US$100,000. The entire project is approximately $230,000, which we expect to achieve with your help.
